Broderick Makes Debut in Monmouth Baseball First
MONMOUTH, Ill. (03/11/2026) — Freshman pitcher Sophia Broderick (Geneva, Illinois) made history on Wednesday as the first female to pitch or play in a baseball game in Fighting Scots history.
The right-hander entered the game for her college debut in the sixth inning, entering with the bases loaded and one out with the Scots trailing Penn State-Behrend 8-3. After a walk and infield single plated two, Broderick recorded her first career strikeout. A sacrifice fly put the Lions up 11-3 and Broderick got out of the inning with a grounder to first.
After the Scots plated a pair of runs, Broderick returned to the mound for the seventh. The first batter popped out to left-center before a walk and stolen base. She recorded a second strikeout and a grounder to shortstop ended the inning.
Broderick came back out for the eighth and left with the bases loaded after a single, double and walk and two of those runs eventually scored. She allowed two runs on two hits and walked three in two innings of work while striking out two.
Broderick was part of the USA Women's National Team Development Program in 2025. She pitched in an exhibition game against Canada for the Women's National Team in 2024
