U.S.-Philippines relations is topic of Monmouth's next Great Decisions on March 4

Monmouth, Ill. (02/28/2020) — The Philippines has had a special relationship with the United States since the islands were ceded by Spain to the United States after the Spanish-American War at the end of the 19th century.

Monmouth College's next Great Decisions discussion forum will examine how that relationship is changing two decades into the 21st century. History professor Michelle Damian will lead the discussion at 7:30 p.m. March 4 in Room 276 of the Center for Science and Business.

All eight discussions in this spring's Great Decisions series are free and open to the public.

Since the election of Rodrigo Duterte in 2016, the Philippines has pivoted more toward China, and away from the United States. Duterte has also launched a largescale war on drugs that many criticize for its brutality. Damian and those in attendance will discuss what the future holds for relations between the countries.
