Ashby Ties Single-Game Runs Record as Scots Sweep Rose-Hulman

Ashby collects seven hits, scores seven times in DH

MONMOUTH, Ill. (04/19/2026) — The Monmouth College softball team went to Indiana and swept Rose-Hulman on Sunday in a non-conference double header as Karliegh Ashby (Monmouth, Illinois) collected seven hits and scored seven runs. Ashby tied a 37-year-old Monmouth single-game record by scoring five runs in the opening game.

The Fighting Scots (13-19, 6-5) have matched their most wins since the 2018 season and return to MWC action with a Wednesday trip to Cornell.

"Coming off a week with no game it was great to see the focus return," said head coach Heather Turnquist. "We had quality in all three phases today for both games with great hitting, pitching and defense."

GAME ONE

The Scots got things going right away as Ashby led off the game with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt. She moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Savannah Powers (Volo, Illinois).

The hosts scored twice against Alyssa Hefflefinger (Olin, Iowa) in the second. A leadoff homer tied the game and a bases loaded groundout put Rose-Hulman on top 2-1.

Alexis Hardy (Rushville, Illinois) led off the third with a single and she moved to third when Ashby singled. After Ashby stole second Ella Cunningham (Dunlap, Illinois) tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Powers put the Scots back on top 3-2 with a RBI groundout.

It was still 3-2 when Ashby doubled to start the fifth. Cunningham doubled for a 4-2 lead and the next two batters reached on fielders' choice grounders. Graci Guenther (Pekin, Illinois) made it 6-2 with a single to right.

The Scots broke the game wide open in the sixth. Elizabeth Waymire (Havana, Illinois) led off with a home run and Hardy singled. Cunningham singled and Powers drove home Ashby with a base hit.

With two outs in the seventh Waymire reached on an error and Hardy walked. Ashby made it 9-3 with a RBI single and Cunningham walked. Powers walked to force in a run and Mackenzie Gerard (Jacksonville, Illinois) put the Scots up 13-3 with a 3-run double. Brooklyn Millhollin (Peoria, Illinois) added a single but an out at the plate ended the inning and Rose-Hulman scored twice in the bottom of the frame.

Hefflefinger (4-7) picked up the win as she allowed two runs on five hits over five innings. Addie Greene (Rushville, Illinois) allowed three runs on five hits in two innings of relief as she struck out two.

GAME TWO

Ashby picked up her fifth hit of the day with a double to start game two. Powers singled with one out and stole second before Gerard gave Monmouth a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly.

Rose-Hulman tied the game in the bottom of the inning against Monmouth starter Lydia Overcash (Farmington, Illinois). The Scots came right back to take the lead in the second as Maddie Hepner (Alexis, Illinois) led off with a single and Waymire singled. An error plated Hepner and Ashby singled home Waymire for her sixth hit of the day. Powers added another RBI for a 4-1 lead.

Neither team scored until the sixth. Ashby led off with a single, her seventh hit of the day. With two down and Ashby at third, Gerard singled to right for a 5-1 lead.

The hosts got a homer off reliever Elizabeth Durfee (Arlington, Washington).to start the bottom of the sixth. The Scots led 5-2 with two outs in the seventh when Rose--Hulman delivered a RBI single. A double made it 5-4 and put the tying run at third and winning run on second base. Durfee got a line out to second to end the game and secure the sweep.

Overcash (5-4) picked up the win as she allowed one run on three hits over four innings while striking out one. Durfee earned her second save with three runs allowed on four hits over three innings as she struck out two.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: The only other player in Monmouth history to score five runs in a game was M Club Hall of Famer Penny Rowan on April 14, 1989 against Grinnell ... Ashby, Millhollin and Hepner had hits in both games ... Ashby had four hits in game one and she scored five runs ... She had three hits in game two and had a double in both games ... The Scots also won 13 games in 2022 and 2019 ... The 2018 team was 20-16 ... Powers had four RBI in game one and two more in game two ... Cunningham, Gerard and Guenther had two hits in game one while Millhollin had three ... Powers, Hepner and Waymire had two hits in game two while Gerard had two RBIAshby, Powers, Gerard, Millhollin, Guenther and Waymire had hits in both games ... The 18 hits in game one are the most for the Scots in any game this season ... Ashby moved into seventh on the career doubles list ... Monmouth is 6-0 all-time against Rose-Hulman and the teams had not met since 2008 ... Monmouth plays a MWC double header at Cornell on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. start ... The next home game is April 25 against Grinnell.
