Baseball Drops Friday Finale in Florida
MONMOUTH, Ill. (03/14/2025) — The Monmouth College baseball team dropped their final game in Florida 15-3 to Lasell on Friday. The Fighting Scots (4-9) went 2-7 in their nine Florida games and return home for Midwest Conference action next weekend.
Both teams went in order in the first inning. The Lasers used a one-out walk and two doubles to take a 2-0 lead against Toby Turnquist (Monmouth, Illinois) in the second inning. A 2-run homer put the Lasers on top 4-0.
Raul Guillermo (Miami, Florida) led off the second with a single to right-center and Eric Campen (Washington, Illinois) was hit by a pitch with one out. Aiden Scott (Carrollton, Texas) reached on a fielders' choice and Guillermo scored on a balk.
The Lasers got that run back in the third with a single, double and wild pitch. Brandon Coats (Mapleton, Illinois) took over on the mound in the fifth and kept the Lasers off the board for two innings.
Alexander Dye (Albuquerque, New Mexico) reached on an error to start the sixth and moved to third on a single by Guillermo. Guillermo moved up on a wild pitch and Dye scored on an error as Scott reached. Lasell got out of the inning on a line drive to keep the score 5-2.
Daniel Lummus (New Port Richey, Florida) singled with one out in the seventh and moved to second as Nate Reed (Chenoa, Illinois) was robbed on a diving play by the Lasers third baseman, A grounder to short ended the inning and the Lasers added two in the eighth for a 7-2 lead.
Lasell added eight runs off relievers Heath Hornke (Normal, Illinois) and Caleb Ochs (Royal, Illinois) in the ninth. Monmouth scored the final run as Lummus plated Scott with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.
Turnquist (1-2) took the loss as he allowed five runs on five hits over four innings while striking out two. Coats struck out three batters and allowed two runs in four innings.
