Both Soccer Teams Fall to Ripon 2-1 on Saturday

MONMOUTH, Ill. (10/08/2022) — The Monmouth College men's soccer team lost their conference home opener to Ripon on Saturday, 2-1. The Scots are now 2-8-2 overall and 0-3 in MWC action.

Ripon scored just after the 20 minute mark to take a 1-0 lead with a long distance shot. Just four minutes later the Scots got even. Nico Esparon (St. Denis, France) played the ball into the goal mouth and Jaxon Coleman (Washington, Illinois) slammed it into the net to tie the game. Just before halftime Ripon took the lead with an unassisted goal.

Neither team scored in the second half. Monmouth outshot Ripon 14-12 for the game and 6-5 in the second half. Esparon led the Scots with two shots on goal while six players had one each. Marcos Garibay (Waukegan, Illinois) started in goal and made three saves in the first half. Dennis Turdean (Chicago, Illinois) posted a shutout in the second half while making three saves in 45 minutes.

The Scots are next in action at 3 p.m. Tuesday at home against Illinois College.

Women's Team Falls 2-1

The Monmouth College women's soccer team took 41 shots, 21 on goal, but lost the Midwest Conference home opener to Ripon 2-1 on Saturday. The Scots are now 3-8 overall, 0-3 in MWC play.

The Scots outshot Ripon 22-1 in the first half but Ripon scored just 4:50 into the game with their only shot on goal in the half. Seven minutes later the Scots got even. Madison Walker (Vernon Hills, Illinois) fed Alyssa Mileham (South Elgin, Illinois) in the box and the junior scored her first career goal.

Just 3:43 into the second half, Ripon scored on a corner kick to take a 2-1 lead. Monmouth put up 19 shots in the second half but couldn't get even. They hit the cross bar once and the post another time. Ripon goalkeeper Andreanna Wilke made 20 saves in the game.

Monmouth outshot Ripon 41-10 with 21 shots on goal. Lea Selquist (Peru, Illinois) started in goal and allowed one goal in the first half without a save. Anna Caster (Greenfield, Indiana) made four saves and allowed a goal in the second half.

Lynn Rech (Vacaville, California) had seven shots on goal and 13 total shots. Walker and Lizzy Gould (Cambridge, Wisconsin) both had four shots on goal and Mileham had three.

The Scots are next in action at 4 p.m. Wednesday at home against Illinois College.
