Broekemier Named AVCA Thirty Under 30
Volleyball coach has led Scots to best start in over a decade
MONMOUTH, Ill. (10/17/2024) — Monmouth College volleyball coach Derrick Broekemier was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Thirty Under 30 Awards program on Wednesday.
The Thirty Under 30 honors program recognizes up-and-coming coaches in different sectors of the sport who serve in a range of roles, from head coach to volunteer assistant to club director. Each of this year's recipients had to be age 30 or under as of Dec. 31, 2023, to qualify for the award.
Broekemier, 29, is in his second season as Monmouth head coach. The Fighting Scots are off to their best start in more than a decade, both in Midwest Conference play (3-0) and overall (14-8). They have already tied the 2021 team for most wins since the 2012 team won 19 games and the 3-0 MWC start is the best since 2011.
The Scots beat Illinois College for the first time since 2013 and won at Ripon for the first time since 2011. The Scots have won four Midwest Conference Performers of the Week this season, three on offense by Kaylee Celus (Annawan, Illinois) and one on defense by Savannah Robinson (Delavan, Illinois).
Heading into Friday's home match against defending MWC champion Cornell, Broekemier has posted a 25-21 record in two seasons with the Fighting Scots and a 7-4 MWC record. Monmouth hosts Cornell at 7 p.m. Friday and Senior Day is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. against Beloit.
