Flynn Nets 16 but Scots Lose at Cornell

MONMOUTH, Ill. (01/15/2025) — The Monmouth College men's basketball team fell behind early and never recovered in an 82-65 loss at Cornell on Tuesday. The Fighting Scots (10-5, 4-2) have lost 11 straight against the Rams and now return home to face Ripon on Saturday.

Jordan Hill (Chicago, Illinois) got the scoring started with a jumper and Cam Thomas (Arlington, Texas) hit a 3-pointer for a 5-0 Monmouth lead. Declan Flynn (Monmouth, Illinois) made a layup for a 7-3 lead and Thomas hit a pair of free throws. After a 6-0 Rams run, Kyle Taylor (Moline, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer for a 12-11 lead. Max Maring (Port Byron, Illinois) tied the game with two free throws before an 8-0 Rams run. Flynn hit a 3-pointer to end the run and then hit another one, trimming Cornell's lead to 24-20. The Rams scored the next 12 points as the Scots went six minutes without a point until Maring scored. Flynn scored Monmouth's next six points but the Rams had 13 points in the span for a 47-28 lead. Hill hit a jumper but the Rams led by 19 at the break.

Zay Brown (Peoria, Illinois), playing through an injury, hit two free throws to start the second half. Taylor added a free throw but Monmouth didn't make a field goal for the first four minutes of the half and trailed 55-33. Thomas hit a 3-pointer and two free throws before Ganon Greenman (Alpha, Illinois) made a layup. Cornell pushed the lead back to 19 before Hill and Brennen McNally (Paw Paw, Illinois) scored on back-to-back possessions. After a 6-0 Rams rin, Greenman and Brown scored for a 65-48 game at the 10-minute mark. Down 24, Brown scored four points while Flynn and Maring added baskets to cut the Rams lead to 18. Both teams went to the bench in the final minutes. Brock Card (Edwards, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer for the final points of the game as the Rams won 82-65. .

Flynn led the Scots with 16 points while Thomas and Maring both had 10. Brown led the way with 10 rebounds and two blocks. Hill and Brown both had four assists and HIll added two steals,

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Flynn has led the Scots in scoring in two straight games and he has five double-digit scoring game of the season ... Maring was also in double digits against Lake Forest when he scored 11 points ... Thomas has been in double figures eight times ... Brown has 10 or more rebounds in four games Card scored his first points at Monmouth with the late 3-pointer ... Monmouth came into the game leading the MWC in rebounding margin at +6 and Cornell was last at -9.5 but the Scots got outrebounded 38-34 ... Monmouth leads the all-time series 81-78 but Cornell has won 11 in a row ... The last Monmouth win in the series was Feb. 13, 2019 at home and the last win in Mount Vernon was on Feb. 17, 2018 ... Coach Skrivseth is 6-19 against the Rams, 2-10 in Mount Vernon ... The teams meet again on Feb. 19 in Glennie Gym ... The Scots play at home on Saturday against Ripon after the 1 p.m. women's game.
