Hatlestad Tosses Shutout as Scots Split Sunday DH

Monmouth scores 24 runs on Sunday

MONMOUTH, Ill (03/07/2022) — The Monmouth College baseball team scored 24 runs on Sunday in a double header split with Gettysburg College on their Florida trip. The Scots (2-2) lost the opener 13-12 on a walk-off double before winning 12-0 behind A.J. Hatlestad's (New Windsor, Illinois) complete-game shutout.

Game one was scoreless after one inning. Jackson Van Iwaarden (Ballwin, Missouri) started the second with a single and Jack Kuethe (Pekin, Illinois) doubled to center with one out. Anthony Ruggles (Aledo, Illinois) put the Scots on top with a single and Tyler Houck (Park Ridge, Illinois) made it 2-0 with a single. With two outs, Nate Melvin (Ottawa, Illinois) gave the Scots a 4-0 lead with a single to center.

Gettysburg tied the game against Nathan Willig (Oswego, Illinois) in the bottom of the inning and took a 6-4 lead on an error. The Scots came right back in the third with another big frame. Van Iwaarden walked with one out and Christian Centeno (Miami, Florida) singled. Kuethe drove in a run with a single and Ruggles walked to load the bases. Houck was hit by a pitch to tie the game as Centeno scored.

In the fourth the Scots kept the bats going. Justin Bost (Reynolds, Illinois) singled and stole second. Raul Guillermo (Miami, Florida) singled and Bost scored on a double by Van Iwaarden. Centeno made it 8-6 with a single to center before Gettysburg got out of the inning.

In the fifth the Scots got another multi-run inning. Houck singled with one out and Melvin walked with two down. Bost doubled home both runners, then scored on a single from Guillermo as Monmouth lead 11-6.

Gettysburg plated four in the fifth against Willig and reliever Luke Kelty (Spring Valley, Illinois). Logan Komater (Ottawa, Illinois) singled home Houck in the sixth to put the Scots on top 12-10 and the Bullets answered with a run. Gettysburg used two walks to get the tying and winning runs on base against Daniel Lummus (New Port Richey, Florida) in the seventh. A one-out double scored both for a 13-12 walk off win.

The Scots got on the board in the first inning of game two. Melvin was hit by a pitch with one out and he scored on a double by Bost. Guillermo's double made it 2-0 and the Scots scored two more in the second when Todd Fowler (Chatham, Illinois) doubled and Komater grounded out.

The Scots broke the game open in the third. Guillermo tripled to start the inning and he scored on a single by Van Iwaarden. Lummus singled and Van Iwaarden scored on a single by Kuethe. Monmouth loaded the bases and Komater reached on an error as another run scored. Melvin drove home two with a double to left and Bost doubled home two more for an 11-0 Scots lead.

Hatlestad kept the Bullets off the board, and for the most part off the bases. Monmouth added on in the fifth when Bost doubled home Houck for the final run of the game. Hatlestad finished off the complete-game shutout with a strikeout to end the 12-0 win.
