Jones Ties Block Record, Adds 22 Points in Monmouth Win

Scots move to 4-4 with 64-57 win over Dominican

MONMOUTH, Ill. (12/13/2024) — The Monmouth College women's basketball team used a 19-0 run to take control in a 64-57 home win over Dominican University on Wednesday. Ashley Jones (Abingdon, Illinois) tied the school record with six blocks and also set a career-high with 22 points as the Fighting Scots (4-4) won their final home game of the calendar year.

The visitors jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first 1:40 of the game with Jones getting Monmouth's first basket. The Scots shut down the Stars the rest of the quarter and went on a 19-0 run that continued into the second. Jones scored again and Ella Goodrich (Minonk, Illinois) hit a layup. Brooklyn Sellers (Freeport, Illinois) made two free throws for the lead and Allie Hoy (Woodland, Illinois) also hit two free throws. Jones scored the next four points and Hoy made it 16-7 with a layup.

Monmouth led 17-7 to start the second quarter and Delaney Scheidenhelm (New Berlin, Illinois) scored on a putback to start the frame. Olivia Dinges (Amboy, Illinois) made the run 19 straight with a putback before the Stars scored their first points in 7:57. Kynlee Stearns (Gilson, Illinois) knocked down a 3-pointer for a 24-11 lead and Goodrich scored halfway through the quarter. Jones gave the Scots a 15-point lead off a turnover and Goodrich made a free throw. Dominican cut the lead to eight before Hoy scored in the paint and Jones added a free throw for a 32-23 halftime lead.

Dominican started the second half with the first five points, trimming the Monmouth lead to 32-28. Jones hit a pair of free throws and Stearns split free throws for a 7-point lead. Goodrich made a layup and a free throw and Jones hit a layup for a 40-30 lead. Sellers and Jones both scored in the lane and Averi Rangel made a 3-pointer to end the quarter with a 49-37 lead.

Rangel hit another 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter and Dominican cut the lead to eight. Scheidenhelm made a free throw and Madison FInch (Aledo, Illinois) added a pair at the line. A 4-0 run by the Stars cut the Monmouth lead to 56-50 before Jones made a pair of free throws with 3:18 to play. Jones stole the ball and found Stearns for a wide-open 3-pointer. The Stars scored four in a row before Stearns drilled another 3-pointer.

Jones scored 22 points and Stearns added 10. Goodrich had nine rebounds while Jones added eight to go with a career-high six blocks. Jones also led the team with three assists and tied Hoy for the team lead with three steals.
