Late Goal Beats Men's Soccer 1-0

MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/12/2026) — The Monmouth College men's soccer team battled on Saturday but lost a neutral site game to Muskingum 1-0 in Indiana. The Scots (0-4) will play on the same field Sunday against Alma, who lost 2-1 to host Wabash in the opening game.

Owen Murray (Cedar City, Texas) had the first shot on goal for either team but his effort was saved in the 12th minute. Ten minutes later, goalkeeper Luis Villa (El Paso, Texas) made a save in his first start of the season. Mubaraq Basheer (Katy, Texas) tested the Muskingum keeper in the 26th minute and Villa made another save just two minutes later. Both teams had corner kicks but the first half ended scoreless.

Neither team put a shot on goal for the first 40 minutes of the second half. With just 4:38 to play, the Fighting Muskies broke through with a goal to take a 1-0 lead. Monmouth won a free kick with just under two minutes to play but were unable to get a shot on goal.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Villa, who started all 15 games in goal last season, missed the first three games with an injury ... He made two saves, both in the first half ... In addition to Villa, Bryan Corona (El Paso, Texas) also played all 90 minutes ... Shots finished 8-5 in favor of Muskingum ... Monmouth had four corner kicks to just two for the Muskies ... The Scots and Muskies had never met before SaturdayMonmouth plays in Indiana again on Sunday with a 1 p.m. ET kickoff against Alma College ... The next home game is September 19 against Grinnell.
