Men's Soccer Ends Season With First Win

Esparon scores in final game

MONMOUTH, Ill. (10/30/2021) — The Monmouth College men's soccer team finished the season with their first win as they won at Lawrence University 1-0 on Saturday. Senior Nico Esparon (Saint-Denis, France) scored the only goal of the game while junior goalkeeper Marcos Garibay (Waukegan, Illinois) made 10 saves.

"I'm just proud of the guys," said head coach Ian Hatleli. "We preached doing the little things for 90 minutes and today that resulted in a win."

Lawrence outshot the Scots 9-7 in the first half but Esparon had the only goal. He scored in the 41st minute on an assist from Ivan Sanchez (Hoffman Estates, Illinois). The assist is the first of the season for Sanchez while Esparon has a team-leading three goals.

Lawrence put six more shots on goal in the second half but couldn't get even. Garibay finished with 10 saves while the Scots defense was credited with two team saves for a total of 12 saves. Esparon and Montgomery Schroeder (Harrisonville, Missouri) both had three shots on goal as Monmouth had seven total.

"By no means did we accomplish what we set out to accomplish this year but today the guys gave all they had for 90 minutes," said Hatleli. "Hopefully we can learn from today and take that attention to detail into the offseason. I couldn't have asked more from them and I'm happy we sent the seniors off the way they deserved."
