Men's Tennis Wins at IC Wednesday

Joseph Shie Wins 11th Straight Singles Match

MONMOUTH, Ill - (04/15/2021) — The Monmouth College men's tennis team opened Midwest Conference play with a 6-3 road win over Illinois College on Wednesday. The Scots are now 1-2 on the season, 1-0 in MWC play.

The Scots got started by taking a 2-1 lead in doubles. In the No. 1 position Joseph Shie (Davenport, Iowa) and Zach Harris (Mascoutah, Illinois) won 8-1. The Scots also won at No. 2 doubles with Andrew Shie (Davenport, Iowa) and Brendan Guenther (Pekin, Illinois) winning 8-1. IC won the No. 3 doubles 8-0 against Adam Greer (Brimfield, Illinois) and Omar Godinez (Tlaquepaque, Mexico).

Joseph Shie won his No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-2 and Andrew was victorious 6-0, 6-0. Harris took the No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-0 and Guenther won at No. 4 6-1, 6-0. His match actually secured the win as he finished just ahead of J. Shie. Illinois College won the last two singles matches 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 against Greer and 6-0, 6-0 over Godinez at No. 6.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Joseph Shie has won 11-straight singles matches dating back to a loss at Illinois College on April 10, 2019...The run is a new personal best as he previous won 10 straight singles matches from March 5 - April 21, 2018The streak is tied for the third longest in Scots history with Sam Graf (2011)The overall record is 18 straight singles wins set by Matt Moser in 2006...Alex Carter is second with 17 straight wins in 2007...Monmouth hadn't won in Jacksonville since 2016 but are 7-2 in the last nine matchups against the Blue Boys...The Shie's are a combined 6-0 in singles this year...The Scots had not played since March 20...They will play six conference matches in 11 days...The Scots are in action Saturday at Grinnell College with a 3 p.m. start, following the women's matches.
