Monmouth College to celebrate Homecoming, Sept. 30-Oct. 1

Monmouth, Ill. (09/23/2022) — The formal dedication of a new campus space and the recognition of an undefeated football team will join the traditional weekend events as Monmouth College celebrates Homecoming Sept. 30-Oct. 1.

Other activities will include award ceremonies, a spirit shout, a parade, a football game and other home Fighting Scots events, and pre- and post-football game gatherings. Reunions will be held throughout the weekend for the classes of 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007, 2012 and 2017.

Sept. 30 events

The induction of tech company founder and CEO Hiroyuki Fujita '92 and U.S. Department of State veteran Karen Krueger '72 into the Hall of Achievement - the highest honor the College bestows upon its graduates - will be part of the Alumni Impact Awards ceremony, which will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, in Mellinger Commons in the Center for Science and Business.

Others to be honored at the ceremony are: United States Army War College professor Joel Hillison '83, Distinguished Alumnus; psychology professor Joan Wertz, Distinguished Service; entertainment lawyer and author Ed Wimp '12, Distinguished Young Alumnus; and the Mary Ann Thome Johnson family, Family of the Year. Educational studies professor Michelle Holschuh Simmons will be presented with the Hatch Academic Excellence Award for Distinguished Teaching.

At 3 p.m. in the Everett Gallery in Hewes Library, a reception will be held for Basia Krol, whose exhibit "Walk With Me" will be on display. Krol will give a gallery talk at 3:30 p.m.

From 3 to 5 p.m., an open house will be held at the Champion Miller Center for Student Equity, Inclusion & Community.

At 4 p.m., the Fighting Scots women's tennis team will play its final home match of the fall against Illinois College at the newly-renovated Monmouth Tennis Stadium.

At 7:30 p.m., the College will pay tribute to its undefeated 1972 football team during the inaugural Fighting Scots Champions Club ceremony in the Huff Athletic Center fieldhouse.

The Homecoming spirit shout will begin at 8 p.m. at April Zorn Memorial Stadium. The traditional celebration, which will feature competition by student organizations and the introduction of Homecoming royalty, will conclude with a fireworks display.

Oct. 1 events

The Saturday, Oct. 1, events will begin at 8:30 a.m. when three former athletes - including one who also served as a Fighting Scots coach - will be inducted into the M Club Hall of Fame. The ceremony for All-American Tanesha Hughes Newell '09, championship-winning coach Chris Pio '84 and baseball standout Taylor Thiel '02 will be held in the Huff Center fieldhouse.

The Homecoming parade on East Broadway between Sixth Street and Ninth Street will begin at 10 a.m. Sponsored by the Association for Student Activity Programming, it will include the Monmouth College Pipe Band and Fighting Scots Marching Band.

At 10:45 a.m., a Theta Chi plaque presentation will be made in the Champion Miller Center, site of the Theta Chi fraternity house from 1942 to 1990.

At 11 a.m., the Fighting Scots volleyball team will host a Senior Day matchup with Midwest Conference rival Lake Forest in nearby Glennie Gym.

At 11:30 a.m., the seventh annual Fraternity and Sorority Life Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held in the Huff Center fieldhouse. Slated to receive acceptance into the Hall of Fame are Mary Grable McLeod '87 and Mary Ann Larsen Zimmerman '88. Immediately following the ceremony will be the traditional Kappa Delta Rose Ceremony in the Center for Science and Business.

A cookout for faculty and alumni will be held from noon-2 p.m. on the east hilltop overlooking Zorn Stadium, and the Homecoming football game against Lawrence will follow with a special kick-off time of 2 p.m.

At 1 p.m., the Trubeck Amphitheatre will be formally dedicated in a ceremony on the north side of the Center for Science and Business. The gift of trustee emeritus William Trubeck '68, the amphitheatre expands the existing Trubeck Fountain Plaza. The space will be used for outdoor classes, fine arts performances and other campus events.

An All-Monmouth Reunion Celebration will be held off campus from 5-9 p.m. at the American Legion, 1110 N. 11th St.
