Monmouth College Women's Tennis Team Back on the Courts This Fall
Home dual meets against Grinnell & Cornell October 9
MONMOUTH, Ill. (06/16/2021) — One of two sports to play in the spring of 2021 and come back for the fall season, the Monmouth College Women's Tennis team will play at least nine dual matches. This spring thee team was limited to South Division Midwest Conference matches so the Scots only played Grinnell College and Illinois College.
The fall season will begin with two trips to Iowa to face three opponents. In the first Monmouth College fall event of the regular season, the Scots will face Central College in Pella, Iowa on Saturday, August 28. Monmouth lost to the Dutch in the fall of 2019.
On Saturday, September 4 a trip to Dubuque, Iowa includes matches against the University of Dubuque and a neutral court match against the University of Wisconsin-Stout. The Scots haven't played Dubuque since 2013 and haven't faced Stout since at least the 2010 season.
The weekend of September 11-12 is currently open before Midwest Conference play starts. The Scots travel to Lake Forest on Saturday, September 18. Monmouth lost to the Foresters in 2019 and Lake Forest made it to the MWC Championships in 2021.
Saturday, September 25 will feature two matches in Wisconsin. In the morning the Scots will play at Ripon College and in the afternoon they face Lawrence University. The Scots beat the Red Hawks 6-3 in 2019 and lost to the Vikings 6-3.
The weekend of October 2-3 is an open weekend before the first home match currently on the schedule. On Saturday, October 9 the Scots will host Cornell College at 9 a.m. and Grinnell College at 3 p.m. The Scots didn't face the Rams in 2021 as Cornell played in the Northern Division. The Scots lost both matches in April against the Pioneers who went to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Scots will also face Illinois College in October with a date yet to be announced. The matchup in Jacksonville may feature a third team playing against both the Scots and the Lady Blues. Illinois College beat the Scots twice in the 2021 regular season and again in the MWC Playoffs.
The 2021 Midwest Conference Championships will be October 15-17 in Madison, Wisconsin.
In 2019 the Scots were 6-8 overall, 4-5 in MWC play, tying for the third most matches won in a season in program history. Of the players back for 2021, Emily Laughlin (Milan, Illinois) won eight singles matches in 2019 and also won the Consolation Finals at the MWC Singles Tournament. She played at #2 singles in the spring of 2021.
Isabel Hammond (Germantown Hills, Illinois) was a 2021 MWC All-Conference Performer with two singles wins and a double win against Illinois College. In 2019 she played at #5 singles and lost in the Consolation Finals
Emily Henson (Geneseo, Illinois) teamed with Hammond to beat IC this season at #2 doubles and they lost in the Consolation Finals of the #3 doubles in 2019.
Julia Mheidze (Springfield, Illinois) and Isa Perez (Chicago, Illinois) played at #5 and #6 singles respectively in 2021 and also teamed to play #3 doubles. The only senior to graduate in 2021 was #1 singles player Emma Johanns (Burlington, Iowa). Johanns also teamed with Laughlin at #1 doubles in 2021.
