Nuclear negotiations on the table for Great Decisions at Monmouth College

Monmouth, IL (02/01/2019) — Can "the art of the deal" apply to stabilizing our nuclear future?

That will be one of the questions posed Feb. 6 as the Great Decisions program at Monmouth College tackles the issue of nuclear negotiations.

Political science lecturer Jessica Vivian will lead the discussion at 7:30 p.m. in Room 276 of the College's Center for Science and Business.

the Trump administration has brought a new urgency, if not a new approach, to dealing with nuclear weapons. The President has met with Vladimir Putin as the New Start Treaty with Russia comes up for renewal in 2021, the first presidential summit ever with Kim Jong-un was held to discuss denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula, and President Trump has decertified the Obama nuclear deal with Iran.

Vivian and the Great Decisions group will discuss several issues related to the topic, including to what degree past nuclear talks should guide future U.S. nuclear arms control negotiations.

Called "America's largest discussion program on world affairs," Great Decisions is a nationwide program sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association, a non-partisan, non-governmental association that works to increase Americans' understanding of foreign policy issues.
