Rech, Gould Lead Women's Soccer to 2-1 Opening Win
Monmouth will host Wartburg Saturday
MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/01/2022) — The Monmouth College women's soccer team got the season off to a great start with a 2-1 win on Thursday morning at Rockford.
The Scots fell behind early as the Regents scored just 15 minutes into the contest. The game remained 1-0 for the next 30 minutes when the Scots pulled even. Sophomore transfer Lynn Rech (Vacaville, California) put in a rebound for the first goal of the season. Rech had eight goals last year at Sarah Lawrence and their first goal as a Fighting Scots player tied the game.
Just three minutes later, Rech turned from goal-scorer to provider. They played a cross through the box and freshman Lizzy Gould (Cambridge, Wisconsin) scored for the 2-1 Monmouth lead. The goal was the first of Gould's collegiate career.
"I'm proud of how the team responded to the adversity of going down a goal early," said head coach Lucas Henderson. "We were short-handed and it took a lot of heart to ground out the win. Avery Parks (Bloomington, Illinois) and Elizabeth Schmidt (Waverly, Iowa) did a great job leading from the back for all 90 minutes."
Monmouth protected the lead from there with the use of two goalkeepers. Lea Selquist (Peru, Illinois) started and made one save in the first half. Anna Caster (Greenfield, Indiana) played the second half and didn't face a shot on goal.
