Schmidt Scores Six Goals in Women's Lacrosse Loss

Monmouth nets season-high 12 goals on Saturday

MONMOUTH, Ill. (04/02/2023) — The Monmouth College women's lacrosse team played their first conference home game on Saturday with a 22-12 loss to Augsburg (3-5, 1-0). The Scots (0-6, 0-2) scored their most goals of the season with 12 and Elizabeth Schmidt (Waverly, Iowa) tallied six goals.

Augsburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game. Monmouth went coast to coast for a goal as Lauren Lehmann (Peoria, Illinois) scored off an assist from Natalie Labicki (Antioch, Illinois). Less than a minute later, Schmidttied the game with an unassisted goal. Mac Holmes (Clive, Iowa) gave the Scots the lead when she scored off a rebound of an Anna Davison (Bettendorf, Iowa) miss on a free-position shot. Schmidt doubled the Scots lead with her second goal of the game for a 4-2 lead with 6:05 to go in the first. The Eagles scored three times over the next five minutes to lead 5-4 at the end of the first quarter.

Augsburg scored the first four goals of the second quarter to take a 9-4 lead. Schmidt got her third of the game with 3:27 to go in the half and a minute later Davison scored to cut the Eagles lead to 9-6.

Schmidt's fourth goal of the game cut the Augsburg lead back to three at 10-7 early in the third quarter. She scored again with 7:59 to go in the quarter and after the Eagles scored, Holmes got her second of the game. Augsburg scored three goals in a row for a 14-9 lead. Lehmann scored with 45 seconds left in the quarter to make it 14-10.

Labicki's first career goal cut the Eagles lead to 14-11 early in the fourth before they scored with 12:25 to play to go back up by four. Schmidt's sixth goal of the game cut the lead to 16-12 with 10:54 to play. However, Augsburg scored the final six goals of the game, including one down a player, to win 22-12.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Schmidt has scored in all six games and leads the Scots with 14 goals. Holmes has six goals on the seasonLea Selquist (Peru, Illinois) made 13 saves in the game. Davison led the Scots with seven ground balls. Kaylee Doebert (Mount Horeb, Wisconsin) had four caused turnovers .Monmouth plays a makeup game at Concordia-Wisconsin on Sunday at 1p.m. The Scots are in action at home on Tuesday with a MWLC game against Lake Forest at 7 p.m.
