Scots Baseball Falls to Beloit on Monday

MONMOUTH, Ill. (04/18/2023) — The Monmouth College baseball team fell twice to Beloit on Monday The Fighting Scots (9-17, 4-10) dropped the suspended game from Saturday 8-4 and lost the game postponed from Sunday 9-2.

Beloit brought an 8-4 lead to Glasgow Field from Saturday's game that was suspended by darkness in the sixth inning. Jakob Brokaw (Andalusia, Illinois) took over on the mound for the Scots and held Beloit scoreless through three innings. However, the Scots didn't score either and the game ended with Beloit winning 8-4.

Jeff Garrett (Aledo, Illinois) took the loss as he started the game on Saturday and allowed eight runs on nine hits over five innings. Seven of those runs were earned and Garrett struck out three. Brokaw threw three hitless and shutout innings with three strikeouts.

In the nine-inning game that followed, Beloit scored in each of the first three innings to build a 6-0 lead. The first five came off starter Cam Anderson (Bloomington, Illinois).

Monmouth got on the board in the fifth. Clayton Matkovic (Sherrard, Illinois) led off with a double and moved to third on a pitch in the dirt. He scored on a groundout by Nate Reed (Chenoa, Illinois) as Monmouth cut the lead to 6-1.

In the eighth, down 7-1, Monmouth scored again. Jack Kuethe (Pekin, Illinois) and Nate Melvin (Ottawa, Illinois) both walked and Beloit changed pitchers. With one out, Matkovic drove home Kuethe with a groundout. Beloit scored twice in the eighth for the final runs of the game.

Anderson (1-3) took the loss as he allowed five runs, four earned, on four hits. The righty walked four and struck out three. Derek Fitzgerald (Robertsville, Missouri) allowed two runs on six hits over a career-high six innings as he struck out one. Nick Corman (Monmouth, Illinois) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks in the ninth while striking out one.

The Scots head to Cornell for a double header on Wednesday. The first game in Mount Vernon, Iowa begins at 4 p.m. The next home game is Tuesday, April 25 against Cornell at 3 p.m.
