Scots Blast Bucs Early, Hold On For 3-1 Win
Monmouth starts road trip with victory
MONMOUTH, Ill. (10/19/2022) — The Monmouth College volleyball team picked up a 3-1 road win over Beloit College on Tuesday to move to 9-11 overall and 2-4 in Midwest Conference play. In a game postponed from Saturday, the Scots got out to big leads and won 25-11, 25-12, 22-25, 25-21..
The Scots took a 6-1 lead in the opening set and pushed it to 12-4. They won six straight points to go up 18-6 and after Beloit cut the lead to nine at 20-11, the Scots won the final five points to take the set.
The second set was very similar. After a tie at 3-3, Monmouth won seven straight points and 13 pof 15 to go on top 18-5. In control the rest of the way, Monmouth took the second set 25-12.
Beloit bounced back and stayed in the third set without letting the Scots roll to a sweep. The set was tied 14-14 and the Bucs won three straight points and never looked back, winning 25-22.
Monmouth led the fourth set early before Beloit caught up at 11. The Bucs led briefly at 13-12 before the Scots went on a 7-3 run to lead 19-16. The teams traded points through 22-19 before the Scots won two in a row to get match point. Beloit held firm on two points but an error gave the Scots a 25-21 set win, and the match.
Layne Wright (Davenport, Iowa) led the Scots with 12 kills while Sarah LaHood (East Peoria, Illinois), Amanda Dybal (Apex, North Carolina) and Paige Bergschneider (Alexander, Illinois) all had seven. Bergschneider le the Scots with 30 assists and three aces while Lauryn Jeffries (Lakeland, Florida) also had three aces. CeCe Palladino (Volo, Illinois) had four blocks and Wright led the Scots with 15 digs.
The match is the first of three MWC titles for the Scots this week, all on the road. They will play at Lawrence University at 7 p.m. on Friday and at Ripon at 1 p.m on Saturday. The next home match is against Iowa Wesleyan at 7 p.m. next Wednesday, Oct. 26
