Scots Swept at Central on Wednesday

MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/24/2026) — The Monmouth College volleyball team was swept by Central College on Wednesday night in Iowa. The Fighting Scots (3-9) never led on the night and fell 25-16, 25-21, 25-10.

The first set was tied 1-1 on a kill by Kaylee Celus (Annawan, Illinois). The Dutch won the next three points and never trailed again in the opening set. Celus had four kills in the set while Bri Woodard (Monmouth, Illinois) added three. Central took the final three points to win the set.

Set two had two ties but no lead changes. Down by as many as five, Monmouth pulled even at 16 on kills by Melina Teunis (Grand Haven, Michigan) and Celus. An ace by Teunis tied the set at 20 but Central won the next three points and finished off the set at 25-21. Celus again led the way with four kills.

Central won the first four points of the third set and never trailed. Central led 5-4 and then went on a 12-0 run before an attack error got the Scots back on the board. After a kill by Chloe Strachan (Reynolds, Illinois) the Dutch won five straight points to lead 22-7. Celus had two kills to make it 24-10 before the hosts finished off the match.

Celus led the way with 10 kills while Woodard added five. Tyla Mattson (Morton, Illinois) had 13 assists and Isa Hughes (Chicago, Illinois) added 10. Celus and Hannah Ivancho (O'Fallon, Missouri) both had six digs while Teunis had Monmouth's only ace. Abby Viano (Braidwood, Illinois) led the Scots with two blocks.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Celus has at least 10 kills in seven of the last eight matches ... Ivancho had a career-high six digs ... Central had 11 aces while Monmouth served one ... Kills were 51-28 in favor of Central ... The Scots are 1-7 in 3-set matches ... The 10 points in the third set is tied with the first set against Hendrix for the low on the season ... Central leads the all-time series 16-2 with four straight wins ... They beat Monmouth 3-1 last year ... The Scots play at home at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29 against Coe.
