Scots Swimmers Solid in Final Tune Up for MWC

Monmouth, IL (01/26/2020) — The Monmouth College swim team spent a busy two days taking a combined third place at Friday's Principia Sprint Invitational before the men placed second and the women third at Saturday's Principia Panther Invitational. The two-day experience was all part of prepping for next month's Midwest Conference championships.

The Scots claimed three wins in Friday's sprints as Jaidlyn Sellers clocked a personal-best of 57.03 to win the women's 100-yard freestyle. Tyler Davis followed suit in the men's race, touching first in 50.84, a mere one-tenth of a second ahead of the runner up. Miranda Pasky added Monmouth's third win, posting a 33.92 in the 50 breaststroke.

Sellers and Pasky teamed with Becca Waxberg and Maggie Wingo to place second in the 100 medley relay, touching in 53.77, less than a quarter-second off the winning pace. The men's 100 free relay also took second. Nicholas Robertson, Julio Neri, Dylan Chiaro and Daniel Kadlec finished in 46.67.

Monmouth's other runner up swims in Friday's sprints came from Tyler Davis in the 200 free (1:50.88) and Kyle Jones in the 50 breaststroke (29.21).

Saturday's Panther Invitational saw the men post three more wins and a trio of runner up finishes by the women.

The Scots' men opened the meet with a four-second win in the 200 medley relay. Preston Bocchi, Joseph Addison, Andrew Lee and Jones raced to the finish in 1:42.50. The women's team of Sellers, Pasky, Waxberg and Wingo placed second in the women's event with a 1:59.11, less than a second out of first. Waxberg also placed second in the 400 IM with a personal best 5:13.35.

Bocchi and Addison joined Davis and Rik Doornenbal for a runner up swim in the 400 free relay. The foursome finished in 3:21.12. The women also took runner up in the 400 free relay. Wingo, Pasky and Sellers added Lauren Fulscher in the mix to clock a 3:56.56.

Doornenbal posted the men's third win on Saturday. Swimming the 200 free, the senior touched in 1:49.87, nearly three full seconds ahead of the runner up.

Addison added a win and a runner up in the individual swims. The freshman won by more than two seconds in the 400 individual medley where he swam a 4:30.56. His 200 butterfly time of 2:03.31 was good for a runner up finish, a half-second off the winning pace.

Bocchi, Jones and Davis each added two more runner up finishes. Bocchi in the 100 and 200 backstrokes (54.29 and 2:00.70); Jones in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events (1:02.46 and 2:22.08) and Davis in the 500 and 1650 freestyle races (5:03.81 and 17:58.09).

The Friday-Saturday combination was the final competition for the Scots ahead of the Midwest Conference Championships to be held in Grinnell, Iowa, Feb. 14-16.
