Scots Volleyball Sweeps Rockford in Home Opener

Wright leads way with 14 kills

MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/07/2022) — The Monmouth College volleyball team swept Rockford University 3-0 on Tuesday night to win their home opener and improve to 2-2 on the season. The Scots started fast and never let up, beating the Regents 25-16, 25-19, 25-18,.

The Scots trailed just once in the first set as they hit .273 and used a big run in the middle to take control. Layne Wright (Davenport, Iowa) had six kills in the set while Paige Bergschneider (Alexander, Illinois) had 10 assists and Savannah Robinson (Delavan, Illinois) had five digs. Delaney Scheidenhelm (New Berlin, Illinois) put the set away with her second kill.

The second set followed a similar script, staying close early with a pair of ties. But this time the Regents never grabbed a lead and the Scots slowly pulled away and cruised to a 25-19 set win. Scheidenhelm had six kills in the set while Bergschneider again provided double-digit assists.

The third set was the most competitive of the night with six ties and four lead changes. Rockford led 10-9 before the Scots got Wright on serve in the rotation. She rattled off seven straight points, including a pair of aces as Monmouth took a 17-10 lead. Rockford chipped away but couldn't close the gap enough as the Scots picked up the sweep.

Overall, Wright led the team with 14 kills while Scheidenhelm had eight. Freshman Cece Palladino (Volo, Illinois) had seven kills and Amanda Dybal (Apex, North Carolina) had five. Bergschneider had 30 of the Scots 34 assists and added seven digs. Robinson led the team with 12 digs and added an ace while Wright had seven digs and freshman Lauren Naven (Dunlap, Illinois) had six.
