Softball Drops Pair on Thursday

Florida Trip Finishes Friday Afternoon

MONMOUTH, Ill (03/14/2025) — The Monmouth College softball team dropped a pair of games in Florida on Thursday. The Fighting Scots (2-10) ;lost the opener 4-1 to unbeaten Marietta College and lost 9-1 to Indiana Tech (10-6) in the nightcap.

Addie Greene (Rushville, Illinois) started the game in the circle for the Scots and gave up one run in the top half of the first inning before adding a strikeout while retiring three straight in the top of the second. The Scots led off the bottom of the second with a walk from Brooklyn Millhollin (Peoria, Illinois) but were unable to bring the game even.

The Scots stringed together three straight two-out hits from Karliegh Ashby (Monmouth, Illinois), Grace Wyman (Pekin, Illinois), and Shelby Covey (Peoria, Illinois) who drove Ashby in to tie the game 1-1.

Neither team was able to scratch a run in the fourth. Alexis Hardy (Rushville, Illinois) poked a single to right field in the top of the fifth. Hardy advanced to second on a wild pitch but back to back fly outs brought the inning to a close.

Lizzie Durfee (Arlington, Washington) relieved Greene to start the sixth inning. The Pioneers brought in a run to take a 2-1 lead in the top half of the inning. Savannah Powers (Volo, Illinois) singled in the bottom half and took second on a wild pitch but was stranded there.

The Pioneers added on 2 more runs in the seventh before retiring the Scots in order to take the game 4-1.

Game 2

Alyssa Hefflefinger (Olin, Iowa) started the game for the Scots and gave up an unearned run in the first inning. The Scots were unable to answer in the top of the second before the Warriors added another unearned run in the bottom half of the inning.

Liz Waymire (Havana, Illinois) led off the third inning with a hit by pitch followed by an RBI double down the line from Mackenzie Gerard (Jacksonville, Illinois) to cut the lead in half. Ashby added a single and stole second but the Scots were unable to bring in another run. Hefflefinger worked around a walk in the bottom half to keep the Warriors off the board.

Addie Narlock (Antioch, Illinois) led off the top of the fourth with a single but the Scots could not capitalize. The Warriors added a run with a two out single to left. Hefflefinger gave way to McKealey Klokkenga (Delavan, Illinois) following a hit by pitch that loaded the bases. The Warriors added three more runs off Klokkenga by way of a walk and two errors to take a 6-1 lead into the fifth.

The Scots had the leadoff hitter on again when Gerard walked but was stranded following three pop outs. The bottom half started with a walk as well before the Scots got outs on a line out to short and a groundout to second. Two walks loaded the bases, which led Kayleigh Cobb (Pawnee, Illinois) to take over for Klokkenga. A walk and an error brought in two more runs for the Warriors to push the lead to seven before another walk brought in the final run to end the game via run rule by a score of 9-1.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Narlock has a 5-game hit streak ... Wyman extended her hit streak to four in game one but was hitless in game two ... Ashby had hits in both games ... She is five stolen bases away from the career top 10 ... Monmouth pitchers walked 14 and struck out one on the day ... Greene made her first collegiate start ... Monmouth had never played either team ... Indiana Tech, a NAIA program, was a last-minute schedule change, replacing Wisconsin Luthern on the Monmouth docket ... The Scots finish the Florida trip on Friday with another game against Marietta at 10:00 a.m. ET and a game against Baldwin-Wallace at 12:15 p.m.
