Softball Earns Saturday Split

Leber tosses another CG in nightcap

MONMOUTH, Ill. (04/09/2023) — The Monmouth College softball team split a Midwest Conference doubleheader on Saturday against Lawrence. The games were moved to Green Bay and the Scots (8-14, 2-4) dropped the opener 11-3 and won the nightcap 7-2

Lawrence took a 2-0 lead against Lizzie Durfee (Arlington, Washington) in the first inning. The Scots answered in the second as Kendall Lewis (Cambridge, Illinois) and Biancha Luna (Monmouth, Illinois) had back-to-back doubles.

Lawrence took a 4-1 lead and the Scots answered in the third. Vanessa Wright (Villa Grove, Illinois) singled to right and scored on a double by MyKenzie Kloess (Dupo, Illinois).

Kloess delivered a sacrifice fly after Calista Warmowski (Spring Grove, Illinois) tripled in the fifth. Lawrence finished off the game with six runs in the fifth to win 11-3 on the mercy rule.

Durfee (1-7) took the loss allowing four runs on seven hits over two innings. Addison Steward (Danvers, Illinois) allowed seven runs total, but only one earned, in 2 innings of work as she struck out three.

In game two, the Scots got going in the second. Kloess led off with a triple and she scored on a single by Lillian Hucke (Aledo, Illinois). Abby Leber (Tremont, Illinois) helped her own cause with a 2-run double for a 3-0 lead and Warmowski's single gave Monmouth a 4-0 advantage.

Leber kept the Vikings off the board and Monmouth added on in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Wright's groundout plated Madelyn Belville (Rushville, Illinois) and Warmowski scored on a wild pitch for a 6-0 lead. An error added a seventh run as Belville scored

Leber (5-5) threw her third straight complete game to earn the win. She allowed just two unearned runs in the sixth inning while striking out nine Vikings.
