Softball Splits First Two Games in Florida

MONMOUTH, Ill. (03/12/2024) — The Monmouth College softball team split their first two games of the Florida trip on Monday with a 15-3 win over Earlham College in the opener and an 11-3 loss to Curry College in game two. The Scots (1-5) will play two games on Tuesday in Clermont, Florida.

The Scots put together a big first inning in the opener with eight runs. The scoring kicked off with an RBI single to right field by Jordan Lantz (Alexis, Illinois). After a wild pitch and a steal of home by Lillian Hucke (Aledo, Illinois), the Scots led 4-0. Kendall Lewis (Cambridge, Illinois) drove in the next run on an RBI single to left field. The first inning scoring was capped off by an inside the park homerun from Grace Wyman (Pekin, Illinois) that put the Scots up 8-0 at the end of the first.

Earlham got on the board in the top of the second off of a two-run single. The Scots answered quickly with a three-run bottom of the second capped off by a Grace Goodrich (Lake Villa, Illinois) 2-RBI double to put the Scots up 11-2 heading into the third.

Earlham scored their final run on a throwing error making the score 11-3 going into the bottom of the third. The Scots put up their final three runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth, finishing with a 15-3 win to start their week in Florida. McKealey Klokkenga (Delavan, Illinois) picked up the win, her first in a Scots jersey.

Game 2

Monmouth dropped their second game of the day, losing to Curry College 11-3. Curry struck first going up 1-0 heading into the second. Monmouth scored in the top of the second on an RBI double from Karliegh Ashby (Monmouth, Illinois) and an RBI single from Lewis for a 2-1 lead.

Curry responded in the bottom half of the second with three runs to take a 4-2 lead into the third inning. Monmouth added one more run in the third inning when Hucke hit into a fielders' choice that brought in Savannah Powers (Volo, Illinois).

Curry answered yet again in the bottom half of the third adding three more runs for a 7-3 lead. They added two more runs in both the fourth and sixth innings leading to a 11-3 loss for the Scots.

The Scots will be back in action Tuesday, March 12 taking on Lakeland University at 9am ET followed by a matchup with Ithaca College in the afternoon.
