Tenth Inning Single Gives Scots Walk-Off Win

Monmouth rallies past Cornell on Tuesday

MONMOUTH, Ill. (04/26/2023) — The Monmouth College baseball team rallied for a 6-5 walk-off win over Cornell College in 10 innings on Wednesday. The Scots (14-19, 9-12) scored six unanswered runs to win the game with Daniel Lummus (New Port Richey, Florida) delivering the game-winning single.

Cornell started the game with a leadoff home run and added two more runs in the third. They plated a pair in the top of the fourth for a 5-0 lead against Monmouth starting pitcher Cade Sharp (Aledo, Illinois). Reliever Toby Turnqust (Monmouth, Illinois) took over in the fourth and prevented the Rams from adding on.

The Scots got the offense going in the fifth inning. Lummus walked to start the frame and Christian Centeno (Miami, Florida) singled with one out. Aiden Scott (Carrollton, Texas) drove home Lummus and Nate Reed (Chenoa, Illinois) walked to load the bases. Centeno scored on a groundout by Tyler Houck (Park Ridge, Illinois) to cut the Cornell lead to 5-2. Nate Melvin (Ottawa, Illinois) singled home two and advanced on an error. Logan Komater (Ottawa, Illinois) tied the game with a single as Melvin scored.

Monmouth left a pair on in the seventh and Cornell left a runner at third in the eighth. Nick Corman (Monmouth, Illinois) took over on the mound in the ninth and Cornell left a runner on second base.

Melvin led off the bottom of the 10th with a walk and Komater reached on an error. With runners on second and third, the Rams intentionally walked Raul Guillermo III (Miami, Florida) to load the bases. Lummus singled home Melvin to give the Scots a 6-5 win.

Sharp allowed four earned runs on four hits and five walks over 3 innings. He struck out two in the no-decision. Turnquist threw 4 shutout innings with one hit allowed. He struck out three and walked two. Corman (1-0) picked up the win with two hits allowed over two shutout innings.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Melvin and Centeno both had two hits. Melvin also drove in a pair. Reed drew four of Monmouth's eight walks. The Scots have won five of their last six games. Monmouth won the season series against the Rams 2-1. Monmouth finishes conference play this weekend. They will travel to Illinois College for a Saturday double header before hosting IC for Senior Day on Sunday at Noon.
