Three in Double Figures but Scots Lose at Lake Forest
Two-game win streak ends on Wednesday
MONMOUTH, Ill. (01/26/2023) — The Monmouth College women's basketball team dropped an 80-66 contest at Lake Forest on Wednesday, ending a two-game winning streak. The Fighting Scots (9-10, 5-5) have one more game on the road this weekend before returning for a three-game homestand.
Lake Forest scored first with a pair of free throws before Tarae Warner (Burlington, Iowa) got the Scots on the board. Zoie Wall (Bartonville, Illinois) tied the game again and Lily Harlan (Washington, Illinois) scored Monmouth's next five points. Down 12-9, the Scots got free throws from Audrey Law (Bloomington, Indiana) and Ashley Jones (Abingdon, Illinois) tied the game at 14. The hosts made a pair of free throws and led 16-14 at the end of the quarter.
Wall's layup put the Scots down two at 18-16 but the Foresters scored the next eight points. Law stopped the run with a bucket to make it 26-18 with 6:48 to play in the half. The Scots went without a point for the next five minutes and trailed by 15 with Allie Hoy (Woodland, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer with 1:16 left in the half. Harlan followed with a basket a minute later and Law's steal and layup made it 31-25 Lake Forest at halftime.
The teams traded baskets early in the third quarter before Warner cut the deficit to five. After LFC scored, Warner hit a 3-pointer with 4:41 left in the quarter to make it 42-38 for the hosts. Law narrowed the gap to three with a free throw but the Foresters scored the next four points. Down seven, Harlan made three free throws over the next two possessions and Wall hit a pair as well but the Foresters scored again to lead 51-44 after three quarters.
Wall scored early in the fourth but LFC scored the next 11 points to go on top 64-46 with 6:14 to play. Wall made a 3-pointer and scored Monmouth's first 10 points of the quarter. Lake Forest's lead peaked at 20 with 4:17 to play. Monmouth scored the next eight points to cut the lead to 72-60 with 1:14 to play. Monmouth cut it to 11 in the final minute on a 3-pointer by Harlan before the Foresters scored the last points of the game for a 80-66 win.
Wall and Harlan both finished with 16 points while Warner had 14. Wall led the team with nine rebounds while Warner grabbed six. Warner and Hoy both dished out three assists.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: The Scots hit a school-record 15 3-pointers to beat Lake Forest 95-64 on Nov. 29 in the first meeting this season.. Lake Forest's Katie Neher finished with 37 points to lead all scorers. Monmouth is 6-4 in the last 10 against the Foresters and had won their last two trips to LFC. Warner and Wall have both scored in double digits in seven of the last eight games. Harlan has gone for 10 points or more in six of the last seven. The road trip continues Saturday at Knox with a 1 p.m. start.
