Throwers Win All Four Events, Men Sweep Relays at First Track Meet of 2023
MONMOUTH, Ill. (01/14/2023) — The Monmouth College men's and women's track & field teams kicked off their indoor season on Friday night by hosting the Midwest Invitational against Augustana and Knox. The Scots came away with multiple first place finishes and a handful of individual career high performances. The meet was also the first for new head coach Brian Woodard who took over for legendary track & field coach, and current Athletic Director Roger Haynes in July.
Men
The men grabbed wins in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays. The 4x200 finished in 1:34.69 as anchor leg Adrian Outlaw (Galesburg, Illinois) flew past Knox in the final lap. Luke Ditsworth (Oquawka, Illinois) started the relay, followed by Reed Bona (Dyersburg, Tennessee) and Alexander Brock (Lexington, Illinois). The 4x400 relay finished the night with a win as Bona went first, followed by freshman Patrick Curry Jr. (Chicago, Illinois), Eli Newton (Dallas City, Illinois) and Outlaw. With a time of 3:32.29 they finished nine seconds ahead of Augustana.
Reed Wilson (Normal, Illinois) won the pole vault at 5.60m. Wilson has won the pole vault at nine indoor team meets in his career including all five in which he vaulted in last season. Bona tied for second at 4.00m.
Caleb Toberman (Clifton, Illinois) won the shot put with a career-best of 14.37m. Shane Anderson (Lisle, Illinois) won the weight throw at 17.31m, just ahead of Toberman at 17.27m. Maurice Greene (Galesburg, Illinois) won the triple jump at 12.63m
Freshman Peter Soutsos (Highland Park, Illinois) got second in the 50m hurdles with a time of 9.58. Newton finished second in the mile with a career-best time of 4:41.15. Freshman Joey Twardowski (Mark, Illinois) took second in the high jump at 1.67m.
Women
Monmouth women finished 1-2 in both throwing events. Addi Cox (Morton, Illinois) won the shot put with a throw of 12.04m, edging out teammate Maddie Boley (Beecher, Illinois) at 11.46m. Amanda Dybal (Apex, North Carolina) won the weight throw at 15.32m with Cox in second at 15.17m and Boley in third at 14.52m . Alyssa Villarreal (Galesburg, Illinois), the defending MWC long jump champion, won the long jump at 5.11m.
The women finished second in both relays. In the 4x200 the quartet of Lauren Anderson (Cambridge, Illinois), Alyssa Villarreal (Galesburg, Illinois), Linsey Turner (Elburn, Illinois) and Nicole Hoyer (Montgomery, Illinois) were 1.8 seconds behind Knox in a time of 1:52.73. In the 4x400 relay, the team of Hoyer, Carina Engst (Bloomington, Illinois), Sklar Garey (Metamora, Illinois) and Ally Celus (Annawan, Illinois) finished second to Augustana by 1.2 seconds with a time of 4:41.70.
Celus finished third in the 200m with a time of 29.03. Turner was second in the triple jump at 10.19m and second in the pole vault at 2.91m. Miranda Hursey (Hanna City, Illinois) and Delaney Rexroat (Monmouth, Illinois) tied for third in the pole vault at 2.76m. Anderson took second in the high jump at 1.45m
The Scots will next be in action on Saturday, Jan. 21 when they head to Davenport, Iowa for the Fighting Bees Invite hosted by St. Ambrose.
