Trio of Scots' Teams in NCAA 2019-20 Statistics Top 10
Monmouth, IL (10/19/2020) — While most of the NCAA's national stats rankings for last year's spring sports did not count due to the season-shortened pandemic, Monmouth College did have three top 10 marks from last fall and winter that did count, statistically speaking.
Football led the charge as their special teams unit tied for two top marks and one eighth-ranked finish. The Scots' punt unit did not have a punt blocked in the entire 2019 season to tie for the top spot and were also tied for No. 1 on the other side of the line, blocking a nation's-best six punts to tie with five other teams. Monmouth ranked No. 8 in net punting, as Joey Biel's 64 punts netted 37.13 yards per punt. He landed 16 inside the 20-yard line with four touchbacks and booted seven more than 50 yards.
Alvaro Alvarez, a junior last fall, netted the 10th-best shot accuracy in all of Division III men's soccer last season. The midfielder put 27 of his 41 shots on goal for a .659 shot accuracy mark, scoring a team-high 10 goals.
Accuracy was also the name of the game for the women's basketball team during the 2019-20 season. The defending Midwest Conference Tournament champions and NCAA qualifiers ranked second in free throw percentage, canning 434 of 557 attempts (77.9%). Brandeis University just clipped the Scots with a 355-for-454 (78.2%) mark. Just three more made free throws by the Scots would have put them ahead of the Judges by two-tenths of a point at 78.4%.
In the spring, Chris Klaiber's men's lacrosse team had posted an NCAA-best .964 man-down defensive mark before the season was called after six games due to the pandemic, wiping out such marks for the 2020 spring season. Had it stood, the mark would have also set the NCAA season record.
