Volleyball Grabs First Win of 2022 with Saturday Split
Home opener set for Tuesday
MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/03/2022) — The Monmouth College volleyball team split their two games on Saturday at the Illinois College Invitational in Jacksonville. The Scots won the first match, 3-1 against Franklin College, before losing 3-2 to Westminster College in the second match.
Monmouth hit .206 in the first set against Franklin with 14 kills and seven errors. With those stats, they prevailed in a tight set 25-22. The Scots took the second set 25-18 before dropping the third by four points. They put the match away with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.
Delaney Scheidenhelm (New Berlin, Illinois) led the way with 14 kills while Layne Wright (Davenport, Iowa) had 12. Wright also led the Scots with four aces and 20 digs. Lauren Naven (Dunlap, Illinois) had 14 digs while Savannah Robinson (Delavan, Illinois) had 13 digs and two aces. Paige Bergschneider (Alexander, Illinois) had 29 assists and Cece Palladino (Volo, Illinois) led the team with three blocks.
Westminster won the first set of the second match 25-17 as they racked up 15 kills. The Scots bounced back and won the next two sets 25-22 and 25-23 to take a lead in the match. Westminster won a tight fourth set 25-23 to force a deciding set, which they won 15-11
Amanda Dybal (Apex, North Carolina) led Monmouth with 18 kills and Wright had 12. Bergschneider had 40 assists to go with 16 digs. Robinson led the Scots with 23 digs against Westminster while Wright had five aces and two blocks.
Monmouth (1-2) will host Rockford University at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Glennie Gym for the home opener of the 2022 season.
