Women's Hoops Fall in Greenville Friday Night

Stearns, Jones score 11 points each

MONMOUTH, Ill. (11/18/2023) — The Monmouth College women's basketball team played their first road game of the season on Friday night. The Scots lost 85-62 at Greenville on Friday and will play another SLIAC foe, Westminster, at the Panthers gym on Saturday.

Greenville jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Jadyn Mitchell (Flanagan, Illinois) made two free throws with 6:50 to go in the quarter. She made two more free throws a minute later and the Panthers took a 12-4 lead. Averi Rangel (Moline, Illinois) knocked down a 3-pointer and Ashley Jones (Abingdon, Illinois) made a layup to cut the lead to 14-9. The Scots knocked down six more free throws in the quarter and trailed 27-16 after one.

The Panthers pushed the lead to 13 before Olivia Dinges (Amboy, Illinois) scored. Down 16, Allie Hoy (Woodland, Illinois) made a 3-pointer for the Scots and then made a layup as she and Dinges combined for the first eight points of the quarter. Kynlee Stearns (Gilson, Illinois) went on a personal 8-0 run for the Scots with a 3-pointer included to cut the Panthers lead to 39-32. Danielle Beach (Geneseo, Illinois) scored on the next possession but Greenville finished the half with three points to lead 42-34 at the break.

Greenville scored the first nine points of the second half for a 51-34 lead before Ella Goodrich (Minonk, Illinois) scored. Jones scored Monmouth's next six points and Kiersten Cox (Illinois City, Illinois) made a jumper for a 58-44 Greenville lead. The Panthers scored the next 10 points before Cox scored again and Stearns made a 3-point with 1:10 left in the quarter. Hoy made a pair of free throws and Greenville led 70-51 after the quarter.

Mitchell scored Monmouth's first four points of the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws and a layup. Goodrich and Rangel added points in the quarter but Greenville answered with their own buckets to maintain a 20-point lead. The Panthers scored the next five points before Delaney Scheidenhelm (New Berlin, Illinois) scored the final points of the game with 28 seconds left.

Stearns and Jones led the Scots with 11 points each while Mitchell finished with 10. Dinges led the Scots with six rebounds and Beach had three assists.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Stearns scored a career-high 11 points. Monmouth was 20-of-28 from the free throw line. The Scots lost to the Panthers 83-71 last November in the first meeting between the two teams since 2011-12. Greenville leads the all-time series 3-1. The Scots play Westminster at 3 p.m. Saturday at GreenvilleThe next home game is Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. against Eureka.
