Women's Hoops Fall in Milwaukee on Saturday

MONMOUTH, Ill. (12/30/2023) — The Monmouth College women's basketball team got the offense going in the second half on Saturday but it wasn't enough as they lost 68-43 at MSOE. The Scots will stay in Milwaukee for a Sunday afternoon game at Mount Mary.

MSOE led 4-0 when Ashley Jones (Abingdon, Illinois) made a layup for Monmouth's first basket of the game. Danielle Beach (Geneseo, Illinois) tied the game with a layup at the 4:59 mark in the first quarter. MSOE took control with an 8-0 run before Allie Hoy (Woodland, Illinois) made a free throw with 22 seconds left in the quarter.

Down 16-5, the Scots got a 3-pointer from Olivia Dinges (Amboy, Illinois) with 8:37 left in the second quarter to cut the deficit to eight. MSOE scored the final 15 points of the half and took a 31-8 lead into the locker room.

The hosts pushed the run to 17 straight before Dinges made a free throw 59 seconds into the third quarter. Down 38-9, Ella Goodrich (Minonk, Illinois) scored in the lane with 6:02 to play in the quarter and Jones hit a 3-pointer on the next possession. Jones hit another 3-pointer and Goodrich made two free throws as part of a 10-3 Monmouth run. Jadyn Mitchell (Flanagan, Illinois) and Delaney Scheidenhelm (New Berlin, Illinois) added baskets while Averi Rangel (Moline, Illinois) made three free throws in the quarter. Beach scored on the final possession of the quarter to cut the MSOE lead to 46-28 as the Scots won the quarter 20-15.

Kynlee Stearns (Gilson, Illinois) scored her first basket of the game and Mitchell knocked down a 3-pointer to trim the lead to 17. MSOE responded with a 10-0 run before Mitchell hit another 3-pointer and then converted a layup. Beach hit a 3-pointer with 2:45 to play to make the score 66-41. Goodrich and Lauren Millhiser (Des Plaines, Illinois) both split free throws and MSOE scored with 1:16 left for the 68-43 final score.

Mitchell led the Scots with 10 points while Jones had eight and Beach had seven. Goodrich led the Scots with seven rebounds and Hoy had three assists.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Mitchell has scored at least 10 points in three straight games and 13 times for her Monmouth career. Ten of the 11 Monmouth players who saw action on Saturday scored at least one point and seven made field goals. The Scots shot 42% from the field in the second half after shooting just 13% in the first half. Mitchell and Jones both made a pair of 3-pointers. Goodrich and Rangel were both 3-of-4 at the line. The teams had never met before last season when Monmouth won 65-47 at home. The Scots are at Mount Mary in Milwaukee at 1 p.m. Sunday and the next home game is Jan. 3 against Lawrence.
