Wright, Dybal Lead Scots Past Lawrence
MONMOUTH, Ill. (10/21/2023) — The Monmouth College volleyball team won their second straight match with a 3-0 sweep over Lawrence on Saturday. The Scots took the road match 25-20, 25-15, 25-15 to move to 4-2 in MWC action.
The first set bounced back and forth with four ties and one lead change. Monmouth took the lead early in the set and never trailed again. Amanda Dybal (Apex, North Carolina) and Paige Bergschneider (Alexander, Illinois) had four kills each in the first set. After the set was tied at 11, Monmouth won six of the next seven points. An attack error by Lawrence clinched the set for the Scots at 25-20.
The second set was tied 7-7 before Monmouth won nine of the next 11 points to lead 16-9. Monmouth kept the pressure on with kills from Layne Wright (Davenport, Iowa) and Dybal to lead 23-14. After an error by the Vikings, Dybal put the set away at 25-15.
Monmouth won the first three points of the third set and never looked back. They pushed the lead to 10-6 and then 15-9. With two mini runs they led 23-11 before Lawrence won four of the next five points. A kill by Alana Robertson (Mapleton, Illinois) finished off the match at 25-15.
Wright led the Scots with 19 kills while Dybal added 14. Savannah Robinson (Delavan, Illinois) led the team with 19 digs and Wright had 17. Bergschneider had 33 assists, 10 digs and two aces. Robertson finished with two blocks while Wright added two aces.
Monmouth's road trip continues with a 7 p.m. match on Friday at Illinois College.
