'Absolutely new' prints by Iowa graduate students on display at Monmouth College
Monmouth, Ill. (10/01/2021) — Visitors to Monmouth College's Len G. Everett Gallery will have an opportunity to see "the leading edge of the next generation of contemporary artists" in a collection of prints by graduate art students.
The diverse exhibition showcases the work of eight students in the graduate printmaking program at the University of Iowa. Two Iowa professors, Terry Conrad and Heather Parrish, who have been working with the students in a grad-level workshop, invited a professor from Iowa State University, Ralua Iancu, to serve as curator for the show.
The exhibition, which features 16 works made by using a variety of traditional and modern printmaking techniques, will be on display through Oct. 24. A reception will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 22 in the Everett Gallery, which is on the upper level of Monmouth's Hewes Library. For the gallery talk at 3:30 p.m., the Iowa professors and three of the students will be on campus to discuss the artworks. The other five students have already been on campus, as they delivered the works and installed the exhibition.
"I am excited to bring this exhibition of prints to Monmouth because it is absolutely new work," said Monmouth art professor Stephanie Baugh. "Current graduate art students truly are the leading edge of the next generation of contemporary artists. The artists are engaging with socially relevant and personal content, and the final forms are varied and push the boundaries of the discipline of printmaking."
Baugh said she is especially excited about the exhibit because printmaking recently returned to Monmouth's regular curriculum of art studio courses.
"I have no doubt that this exhibition will be both inspirational and challenging to my print students," she said.
Iancu, the curator, has had an emphasis on printmaking throughout her time as a student and professor. An assistant professor in art and visual culture at Iowa State, she earned her master's of fine arts in studio art from the University of Tennessee and her bachelor's degree in printmaking from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Canada.
This year, she received the Foundations in Art: Theory and Education Emerging Educator Award and a Miller Fellowship from Iowa State's Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. She has exhibited internationally at venues in Poland, Macedonia, Romania and Korea, as well as nationally at the International Print Center of New York, the Bradbury Art Museum in Arkansas and the Art Institute of Boston.
Iancu has been an artist-in-residence in both the United States and abroad. Her international assignments have been in Spain, Poland and Canada.
