ABBA tribute, Patty Nieman and Friends on tap at Monmouth College April 14-16

by Barry McNamara

Monmouth, Ill. (04/09/2024) — Over a three-day span, Monmouth College will host a pair of concerts in Dahl Chapel and Auditorium featuring visiting performers who will showcase a wide range of popular music.

On April 14, Patty Nieman and Friends will present a 2 p.m. concert. Then the final Maple Leaf Community Concert Series program of the 2023-24 season will be staged at 7 p.m. April 16. Performing will be ABBAFAB, a tribute band that sings all the classics by the pop supergroup ABBA.

Admission to the ABBAFAB concert is free to individuals with a Monmouth College ID. For others, tickets are available at the door or in advance at the Buchanan Center for the Arts in downtown Monmouth.

The Patty Nieman event is free and open to the public.

ABBAFAB promises to take audience members on "a technicolor journey that is unmatched," covering the Swedish group's earliest hits, "Waterloo" and "Honey, Honey," later songs such as "The Winner Takes It All," and everything in between.

ABBAFAB's vocalists and musicians have toured the world as solo artists and band members and have come together to create what they call "the most entertaining ABBA concert anywhere in the world."

From Carleton to Monmouth

In the music world, "ACM" is known as the Academy of Country Music, but in Nieman's case, the Associated Colleges of the Midwest applies. The Minneapolis-based actress and singer graduated from Carleton College, which, like Monmouth, is a member of the ACM.

Nieman, who majored in music at Carleton, has performed at Twin Cities venues such as the Guthrie Theater and the Great American History Theater. The St. Paul Pioneer Press has described her voice as "sparkling" and "knock-it-out-of-the-park."

During her Monmouth concert, Neiman will perform music from the Great American Songbook, new musical theatre and contemporary cabaret spanning 90 years of music, mixed with stories of living well as an artist and her unexpected move back home after living in New York City.
