Nick Ehlen named Monmouth College's director of campus safety

by Barry McNamara

Monmouth, Ill. (07/30/2020) — Nick Ehlen has been named Monmouth College director of campus safety.

Ehlen joined the College's staff in 2015 and returned three years ago to work alongside the previous director, Andy Davis, who resigned his position earlier this summer to take a job in education.

"I've worked closely with Andy for several years, and I'm really familiar with the campus and pretty confident with what our office does and needs to do," said Ehlen. "The only things that are going to be new to me are some of the managerial duties."

New to everyone, of course, is how to do their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Ehlen said his office is ready and willing to help. Fall classes are scheduled to start Aug. 18.

"We'll be out and about, wearing our masks and encouraging everyone else to do so, as well," said Ehlen. "We're also going to be working closely in that respect with (Assistant Dean of Students) John Salazar in residence life."

One thing that will be different this year will be how student ID cards are made. Previously, students had to report to the lower level of Poling Hall.

"Students can now submit photos for their IDs," said Ehlen. "We're getting that done for this year, and the students have been sending them in, even as we speak."

A 2014 graduate of nearby United High School, Ehlen took law enforcement classes at Carl Sandburg College.

"I've always been interested in law enforcement and public service," he said. "I joined the Central Warren Fire Protection District (located in his hometown of Kirkwood) as a volunteer, and I've interned with the Galesburg Police Department."

Initially, Ehlen was a second-shift officer at the College in 2015 before leaving to work at the Warren County Sheriff's Office. The certified correctional officer returned to the campus safety team in 2017.
