Scots' Men's Swim Team Earns Prestigious National Academic Award

Monmouth, IL (01/29/2020) — Monmouth College's men's swim team entered unchartered waters this week when the College Swimming and Diving Coaches' Association of America (CSCAA) named the squad a Scholar All-America Team for the first time in program history.

The men posted a team grade point average of 3.24 to earn the award for the fall semester. It was the men's first team academic distinction after the women's team was awarded the honor following the 2015-16 season. Scholar All-America Team status is bestowed upon teams which compile a minimum GPA of 3.0. Monmouth's women were just shy of that mark last fall with a 2.99 team GPA.

"It's a true testament to the work these student-athletes put in to balance their athletic endeavors and classroom work," said coach Tom Burek, now in his seventh year guiding the program. "It's exciting for me to see the men break through after being so close to the award a couple of years ago. We might see some friendly classroom competition between the men's and women's teams now that both have the award to their credit. Our challenge is to maintain those high academic marks and continue to perform at a high level in the pool."

Physics, economics, accounting and exercise science were the most popular majors for the Scots men. The 11-man roster also includes two double majors.

Founded in 1922, the mission of the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America is to advance the sport of swimming and diving with coaches at the epicenter of leadership, advocacy and professional development.
