by Nathan Baliva

MONMOUTH, Ill. (10/05/2023) — The Monmouth College women's soccer team scored early and often in a 4-0 win over Cornell on Wednesday.. The Scots (3-5-3, 1-1-1) got two goals from freshman Danielle Beach (Geneseo, Illinois) and two goalkeepers combined on the shutout.

Beach put the Scots on top with a breakaway goal in the third minute. She nearly made it 2-0 moments later but was denied in the box. Monmouth kept pushing forward and senior captain Elizabeth Schmidt (Waverly, Iowa) scored in the 21st minute. The Scots kept the lead at 2-0 at halftime as Anna Caster (Greenfield, Indiana) made two saves.

The Scots added to the lead in the 53rd minute as Beach scored again. Senior Jae Mitchell (Rockford, Illinois) netted a breakaway goal with 6:56 to play for a 4-0 lead. Lea Selquist (Peru, Illinois) played the final 24 minutes and made two saves to combine with Caster on the shutout.

"Danielle had a fantastic run for the first goal and then we found our rhythm," said head coach Lucas Henderson. "The message for the second half was to get the next goal and we wanted the shutout. It was nice to see us get a couple more and finish it off."

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Avery Parks (Bloomington, Illinois) and Schmidt played all 90 minutes. Beach, Madison Walker (Vernon Hills, Illinois), Lynn Rech (Vacaville, California) and Mitchell all had four shots on goal. Monmouth had 22 shots on goal in the game. The teams came together pregame to honor Brooke Gruby (Leonardtown, Maryland) and celebrate the memory of her mother Christina who passed away from cancer last month. The Scots wore pregame shirts with Gruby's No. 12 and encouraged fans to donate to American Cancer Society. Monmouth has three wins and a draw in the last four games against Cornell. The Scots will travel to Illinois College on Tuesday with the next home game at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14 against Lake Forest.
