Boyer Accounts for Five TD as Scots Dominate Beloit Saturday
Monmouth moves to 5-0 in MWC play after building 42-0 halftime lead
MONMOUTH, Ill. (10/16/2022) — The Monmouth College football team stayed undefeated in conference play with an empathic 64-0 home win over Beloit College on Saturday. The Scots (5-1, 5-0) scored 21 points in each of the first two quarters and quarterback Carter Boyer (Carthage, Illinois) accounted for five total touchdowns on the day.
The Scots took the opening kickoff and covered 70 yards on eight plays to take the lead. Boyer was 5-for-6 on the drive and finished with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jake Uryasz (Farmington, Illinois). The Scots got the ball back immediately as Tevin Baker (Kewanee, Illinois) recovered a fumble, but Boyer was picked off going deep from the 41.
After Beloit punted short to the 34, the Scots attacked immediately. With a free play on an offsides penalty, Boyer went deep and connected with Nate Thornton (Peoria, Illinois) on the first play of the drive for a 14-0 lead.
Beloit went 3-and out again, punting to the Monmouth 45. The Scots moved their way down the field on an 11-play drive before Boyer scored on a 1-yard rush for a 21-0 lead. Another 3-and-out gave the ball back to the Scots in the first quarter in Beloit territory. The drive continued into the second quarter and Boyer found Brendan Bishop (Sherman, Illinois) for a 6-yard touchdown. Riley Fetterer (Milan, Illinois) got the next drive at quarterback for the Scots and led an 8-play, 74-yard touchdown drive. After completing 3-of-4 passes on the drive, Fetterer scored on a 40-yard run for a 35-0 Scots lead. Monmouth tacked on another score when Sencere Brent (Peoria, Illinois) returned a punt 30 yards for a touchdown after Caleb Endicott's (Saint Cloud, Florida) strip-sack fumble forced the ball loose. The game went into the locker room with a 42-0 score as Monmouth's Cody Szelc (Riverview, Florida) missed a 38-yard field goal wide right on the last play of the half.
After a quick three-and-out to start the third quarter, Beloit's punt went just 15 yards, giving the Scots the ball on the Beloit 27. Four plays later, Boyer ran the ball into the endzone from 16-yards out for a 49-0 lead. Monmouth got the ball back at their own 49 and switched to freshman quarterback Brayden Deem (Andalusia, Illinois). Deem completed his first varsity pass to Andrew Rockford (Springfield, Illinois) for 17 yards. The rest of the drive was done on the ground with Devin Pinkard (Wildwood, Florida) scoring on a 6-yard run for a 56-0 lead.
Hayden Eugene (West Palm Beach, Florida) recorded an interception to give the Scots the ball on their own 48. A new mix of offensive players took over with five freshmen running backs getting their first carries of the game on the drive. Those five, Alex Egipciago (Galesburg, Illinois), Jeremiah Austin (Winterhaven, Florida), Javarius Whitfield (Ottawa, Illinois), AJ Blanton (Port Richey, Florida) and Kenyun Carlton (East Peoria, Illinois). They combined for 12 carries, covering 52 yards in 7:38 before Austin scored from the three for a 62-0 lead. The snap on the extra point was botched and Bishop ran the ball across the goal line for two points and a 64-0 Monmouth lead.
The Scots didn't attempt a pass in the fourth quarter. The same five freshmen ran for 39 yards on the next drive before Deem punted on 4th and 1 from the Beloit 38. Deem ran for two yards on the next drive and when Beloit used their timeouts in the final minute as the Scots took a knee, Deem punted to the Beloit 48. The Buccaneers ran one play for four yards to more than double their rushing yards on the game as the clock ran out.
Boyer accounted for 158 yards and five touchdowns on the day. He completed 13-of-17 passes for 141 yards and ran three times for 17 yards and two scores. Fetterer was 7-for-11 for 87 yards and he ran for 57 yards and a touchdown while also catching four passes for 18 yards. Uryasz, Thornton and Bishop all had touchdown catches. Uryasz caught five passes for 47 yards while Thornton caught four for 77 yards.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Korbyn Personett (Pittsfield, Illinois) had one sack and two tackles for loss while Endicott also had a sack and two tackles for loss with a forced fumble. Tanner Tomaschke (Greenville, Illinois) and Tyler Geary (New Port Richey, Florida) both led the Scots with six tackles in the game. Monmouth held Beloit to seven yards rushing on 30 attempts and 33 yards passing on 5-of-16 completions. The Scots outgained Beloit 492-40 overall. Monmouth was 10-for-16 combined on third and fourth down while Beloit was 1-for-11 on third down. The Scots have won eight straight against Beloit with at least 52 points in five of those wins. Monmouth is 15-1 against Beloit since 2003 with four shutouts. The Scots are on the road for the next two Saturday's, starting with a 1 p.m. kickoff at Cornell on Oct. 22. The next home game is Senior Day against Ripon on Saturday, Nov. 5.
