MONMOUTH, Ill. (11/17/2022) — The Monmouth College men's basketball team led late in the first half but eventually fell to Coe College 79-57 on Wednesday night. The Scots (2-2) were outscored 24-6 over the final 10:04 as the Kohawks (2-1) pulled away in the non-conference matchup.

Monmouth jumped out to an early lead as Kyle Taylor (Moline, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession. Jordan Metcalf (Aledo, Illinois) scored in the lane on the next trip and the Scots led 5-0. Coe scored the next 10 points before Taylor made a layup. With Coe up 15-7, David Williams (Loves Park, Illinois) got on the board and Jordan Hill (Chicago, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer. Hill put the Scots up 18-17 with a layup and Ganon Greenman (Alpha, Illinois) made it 20-17 with a put back.

Coe went on a 5-0 run to regain the lead but Hill's jumper gave the Scots a 25-24 advantage with 4:44 left in the half. Down one, Hill drilled a 3-pointer with 1:51 left to put Monmouth on top 28-26, his third 3-pointer of the half. Coe tied the game with 1:37 left and the free throw to complete the 3-point play gave the visitors a 29-28 lead. Neither team scored the rest of the half and Coe went to the locker rooms up one.

Coe scored the first five points of the second half before Williams made a jumper. Kendall Brasfield (Chicago, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer in transition to cut the Coe lead to 34-33 before the Kohawks made two free throws. Coe pushed the lead to four and Williams hit a 3-pointer with 16:07 to play. The margin stayed under four until the Kohawks went up 51-46 on a 3-pointer at the 12:49 mark. The Scots got it back to four on a Metcalf jumper with 10:25 to play but that was as close as the scoreline got the rest of the way.

Coe hit a 3-pointer on the next possession to go up 58-51 and the Scots didn't score again until Brasfield split free throws to make it 65-52 with 6:29 left. The free throw came right after Metcalf fouled out at the 6:40 mark. Brasfield made another free throw with 4:06 left and the Scots were down 68-53. With Coe up 24, both teams went to the bench. Tyler Harms (Flanagan, Illinois) made two free throws with 1:29 to play to cut the Coe lead to 78-55. After the visitors made a free throw, Harms scored in the lane for the final points of the game as Coe won 79-57.

Hill led the Scots with 13 points, all in the first half. Brasfield finished with 10 points, all in the second half, while Taylor had nine and Williams had eight. Metcalf led the Scots with five rebounds while Taylor had four assists.
