Esparon's Goal Leads Scots to 1-0 Monday Win

Monmouth Snags First Home Win of 2022

by Nathan Baliva

MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/20/2022) — The Monmouth College men's soccer team grabbed their first win of the season on Monday afternoon with a 1-0 win over Coe at Peacock Park. Nico Esparon (St. Denis, France) scored the only goal of the game while Marcos Garibay (Waukegan, Illinois) made nine saves to earn the shutout.

The Scots and Kohawks went back and forth early in the game with both teams getting a couple shots on goal. The game was scoreless in the 30th minute when Esparon picked up a loose ball in the defensive half. He dribbled across midfield and let it fly, catching the Coe goalkeeper off his line for the goal. Esparon had two goals last week against Fontbonne and now has three on the season.

Neither team scored the rest of the way in hot and humid conditions. Coe ended with 17 shots to the Scots nine and the visitors led in shots on goal, 9-6. Reid Sondgeroth (Mapleton, Illinois) and Cameron Anderson (Bloomington, Illinois) both had two shots on goal. Garibay made all nine saves to earn the shutout.

Monmouth (1-4-2) will host Finlandia on Friday with a 3 pm kickoff at Peacock Park.
