Four in Double Figures but Scots Drop Finale at Grinnell

MONMOUTH, Ill. (02/18/2024) — The Monmouth College women's basketball finished the season with an 83-71 loss at Grinnell College on Saturday.

Kynlee Stearns (Gilson, Illinois) and Ashley Jones (Abingdon, Illinois) scored early but Grinnell built a 10-4 lead. Ella Goodrich (Minonk, Illinois) scored five straight points and Stearns hit a 3-pointer for a 16-13 Monmouth lead. Averi Rangel (Moline, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer and Jadyn Mitchell had a 3-point play as the Scots led 22-19 after the first quarter.

Stearns scored Monmouth;s first four points of the second quarter and Jones added a bucket. Grinnell tied the game at 29 before Stearns hit another 3-pointer. Mitchell scored and Jones hit a 3-pointer for a 37-31 lead. However, Grinnell finished the half on a 9-2 run to lead 40-39 at the break.

Grinnell scored the first five points of the third quarter and had an extended 9-2 run. Danielle Beach (Geneseo, Illinois) made a 3-pointer and Stearns connected on a layup. Beach made another 3-pointer and Allie Hoy (Woodland, Illinois) scored for a 56-51 Grinnell lead. The Pioneers pushed the lead to 10 at the end of the third quarter.

Grinnell scored the first six points of the fourth before Beach hit a 3-pointer. Jones scored in the lane and Mitchell connected on a layup. Grinnell pushed the lead to 83-65 before the Scots finished the game on a 6-0 run.

Stearns led the Scots with 17 points while Beach had 12. Mitchell and Hoy were also in double figures with 11 points while Jones added nine. Goodrich led the Scots with nine rebounds, two more than Beach.
