Goodrich, Mitchell Lead Scots to Win over Mount Mary

Monmouth finishes game on a 11-0 run

MONMOUTH, Ill. (01/01/2024) — The Monmouth College women's basketball team finished off the 2023 calendar year with a 56-46 win at Mount Mary on Sunday. Ella Goodrich (Minonk, Illinois) and Jadyn Mitchell (Flanagan, Illinois) both scored in double figures for the Fighting Scots.

After trailing 4-0, Goodrich got the Scots on the board and Allie Hoy (Woodland, Illinois) scored the next basket. Mount Mary led 9-4 when Ashley Jones (Abingdon, Illinois) scored and Delaney Scheidenhelm (New Berlin, Illinois) tied the game with a 3-point play. Averi Rangel (Moline, Illinois) hit a 3-point with 1:21 left in the quarter for a 12-11 Monmouth lead.

The teams traded the lead for the first three minutes of the second quarter until Goodrich made a free throw and added a basket for a 21-18 Monmouth lead. Mitchell made a pair of free throws but the Blue Angels regained the lead. Jones put the Scots back on top and Hoy hit a 3-pointer for a 30-25 lead.

Goodrich scored to start the second half but the hosts tied the game with a 7-0-run. Danielle Beach (Geneseo, Illinois) tied the game but Mount Mary scored four in a row. Rangel hit another 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 40-39. Scheidenhelm and Mitchell scored the last four points for the Scots in the quarter for a 43-42 lead.

Mount Mary took a 46-45 lead with 6:45 to play, but the Scots finished the game on an 11-0 run. Kynlee Stearns (Gilson, Illinois) put the Scots on top for good with a layup and she made it a 50-46 lead with a jumper. Hoy hit a 3-pointer and Monmouth finished off the game with free throws from Mitchell and Stearns in the final minute.

In addition to leading the Scots with 13 points, Goodrich also led the team with nine rebounds. Jones and Scheidenhelm both had seven rebounds and Goodrich and Beach both grabbed four steals. Mitchell led the Scots with four assists to go along with 10 points.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Mitchell has scored at least 10 points in four straight games and 14 times for her Monmouth career. Eight of the nine Monmouth players who saw action on Sunday scored at least three points. Monmouth won the battle of the boards 45-38. The Scots had 17 steals and forced 21 turnovers, The Scots return to MWC action on Wednesday against Lawrence, playing after the 4 p.m. men's game.
