Hernandez, Casey Score Three Goals Each in Scots Loss
MONMOUTH, Ill (04/23/2023) — The Monmouth College men's lacrosse team lost a conference game at Northland College on Saturday. The Scots (1-12, 0-4) fell to the Jacks (5-7, 2-2) 17-6 and will finish their season next Saturday against Cornell.
The Scots trailed 2-0 when Michael Casey (Chicago, Illinois) scored on an assist from Carlos Hernandez (Billings, Montana). The hosts scored three straight to go on top 5-1 before Hernandez scored with 6:39 to play in the first quarter. Casey scored 41 seconds later to cut the Northland lead to 5-3 but the Jacks scored two more times before the quarter ended.
Hernandez scored the first goal of the second quarter and then assisted on a Casey goal with 6:48 to play in the half. Monmouth trailed 7-5 but Northland scored the final four goals of the half.
Hernandez scored with 11:04 to play in the third quarter to cut the NC lead to 12-6. But Northland scored the final five goals of the game to win 17-6.
Hernandez and Casey scored three goals each. Hernandez added two assists and Casey had one. Gordon Kiesgen (Spring Grove, Illinois) was 21-for-26 on faceoffs and led the Scots with 16 ground balls. Nehemiah Declaw (Aurora, Illinois) finished with 12 saves in goal.
The Scots finish the season at home on Saturday, April 29 against Cornell at Noon. The seniors will be honored in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony.
