Holmes Scores Twice in Women's Lacrosse Loss
Scots drop conference opener to Wartburg
MONMOUTH, Ill. (03/29/2023) — The Monmouth College women's lacrosse team opened conference play with a 12-5 loss at Wartburg on Tuesday night. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, March 18 but was postponed due to inclement weather.
Wartburg took a 2-0 lead before Mackenkie Holmes (Clive, Iowa) scored with 4:30 to play in the first quarter. Anna Davison (Bettendorf, Iowa) picked up the assist and Monmouth trailed 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Playing in her home city, Elizabeth Schmidt (Waverly, Iowa) cut the Wartburg lead to 3-2 early in the second quarter with an unassisted goal. Just a minute later, Noelle Faulk (Elmhurst, Illinois) tied the game with an unassisted goal. Monmouth took the lead with 5:41 to go in the half as Holmes scored on an assist from Lauren Lehmann (Peoria, Illinois). Wartburg scored two goals in 12 seconds to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.
The Knights scored all three goals of the third quarter and added two more to start the fourth for a 10-4 lead. Davison scored to end the seven-goal run with 7:18 to play and Wartburg added two more goals over the next two minutes for the 12-5 win.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Schmidt has scored in all five games and leads the Scots with eight goals/ Holmes has four goals on the season. Lea Selquist (Peru, Illinois) made 12 saves in the game. Tori Cook (Joliet, Illinois) led the Scots with four ground balls while Davison had three. Cook and Schmidt both had two caused turnovers.The Scots are in action Saturday with a home conference game against Augsburg at Noon.
