Meldrum Scores Seven Goals in Women's Lacrosse Loss
Holmes adds hat trick for Monmouth
MONMOUTH, Ill. (03/27/2021) — The Monmouth College women's lacrosse team fell at home to Augsburg College 18-12 on Saturday afternoon in a Midwest Lacrosse Conference match. Sophomore Madison Meldrum (Colona, Illinois) scored seven goals and Mac Holmes (Clive, Iowa) had a hat-trick in the loss.
The Auggies jumped on top just 12 seconds into the game and added a second goal a minute later. Meldrum scored her first of the game with 27:27 to play in the first half. The Scots trailed 3-1 when Meldrum scored again at the 24:56 mark.
Augsburg scored seven of the next eight goals to take a 10-3 lead. The Scots goal in that stretch again came from Meldrum to make it 5-3 before the visitors scored five in a row.
"We had come out flat on attack the first two games so it was nice to see our offense start to produce," said coach Elizabeth Demara. "We are finding opportunities but have more things to clean up defensively and in transition."
Monmouth put consecutive goals on the board to get within five as Meldrum scored her fourth of the game and Holmes grabbed her first. Aspen Chadderdon (Marshalltown, Iowa) scored with 5:46 to play in the first half but the Scots went into the break down 13-6.
Monmouth cut the lead back down to five with two goals early in the second half. Holmes scored twice in 58 seconds, one unassisted and the other helped by Chadderdon, as Monmouth trailed 13-8.
Skylar Rapp (Oxnard, California) scored her first collegiate goal with 13:41 to play in the game before Augsburg scored twice to go back up by seven. The teams traded goals over the final seven minutes as Meldrum scored each of the Scots final three goals. Her goal with 0.7 seconds left gave her seven on the day and provided the final score of 18-12.
"Meldrum had a heck of a day, love that for her," said Coach Demara. "Just awesome. She has been out with an injury, working on stick work and finishing. She wants to play and wants the ball and I love that for her."
