Men's Soccer Rallies to Draw Lawrence
Price, Hipolito Score in 2-2 MWC Opener
MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/24/2023) — The Monmouth College men's soccer team started Midwest Conference play on Saturday at Lawrence with a 2-2 draw. The Scots rallied to tie the game in both halves in the road game.
The Vikings scored in the 23rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Less than three minutes later, Isaac Price (Peoria, Illinois) scored his second goal of the season, unassisted, to tie the game. Lawrence scored in the final five minutes of the first half to take a 2-1 lead into the break. Both teams had three saves in the first half.
Monmouth tied the game again in the 57th minute. The Scots won a corner and Mathew Hipolito (Plainfield, Illinois) scored his first collegiate goal to tie the game 2-2. Neither team scored the rest of the way. Monmouth had a free kick in the final 20 seconds but the shot went over the bar.
Monmouth goalkeeper Christopher Zavala (New Lenox, Illinois) made five saves. Branyon Heard (St. Louis, Missouri) led the Scots with three shots on goal while both Price and Hipolito had two shots on goal.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Monmouth beat Lawrence 2-1 in the home finale last season. The Scots won in Appleton 1-0 in 2021 and haven't lost in the last seven games against the Vikings. Monmouth's last loss in the series was in Appleton in 2015. Shots on goal were 9-7 in favor of the Scots. Tanner Viren (East Moline, Illinois), Nathan Braun (Clancy, Montana), Logan Corgan (Geneseo, Illinois), Zavala, and Hipolito played all 90 minutes. The Scots will host Senior Day next Saturday before playing Beloit at 1:30 p.m/ The 1996 Midwest Conference champions will be honored pregame as well and inducted into the Monmouth Champions Club.
