Men's Tennis Drops Three Matches in St. Louis Area

MONMOUTH Ill. (03/23/2025) — The Monmouth College men's tennis team started their spring season with three matches in the St. Louis area this weekend. The Scots fell 7-0 at Webster on Friday night, 6-1 at Principia Saturday morning and lost a neutral site match to Illinois Wesleyan 7-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Against Webster, Monmouth lost the doubles point with 6-1 losses at #1 and #2 and a 6-0 loss at #3. Sawyer Day (Cupertino, California) and Matthew Savage (Washington, Illinois) played at #1 with Antonio Perez (St. George, Utah) and Macaden Sepich (Mackinaw, Illinois) at #2. Spencer Corn (Kansas City, Missouri) and Andrew Nickols (Janesville, Wisconsin) played at #3.

In singles, Day lost 6-0, 6-3 at #1 while Savage lost 6-3, 6-1 at #2. Perez and Sepich both lost 6-1, 6-1 at #3 and #4 respectively while Corn and Nickols lost 6-0, 6-0 at #5 and #6.

Against Principia, Day and Savage lost 6-1 at #1 doubles while Corn and Perez lost 6-0 at #2. Principia didn't have a #3 doubles team but won the point 2-1.

In singles, Day, Savage and Perez all lost 6-2, 6-1 at #1, #2 and #3. Sepich lost 6-2, 6-3 at #4 and freshman Alfonso Mares (Oak Lawn, Illinois) played at #5 forcing a 3rd-set tiebreak before losing 6-2, 2-6, 10-3 Nickols was awarded a forfeit win at #6 since Principia didn't have six players.

Against Illinois Wesleyan, Day and Savage lost 6-1 at #1 doubles while the other doubles matches were 6-0 for Perez/Corn and Mares/Nickols.

In singles, Day and Savage both lost 6-1, 6-3 at the top two spots while Perez lost 6-0, 6-0 at #3. Sepich lost 6-0, 6-2 at #4, Nickols went down 6-0, 6-0 and Corn lost 6-2, 6-0 at #6.

The Scots next matches are the home openers and MWC openers on April 5. The Scots host Cornell at 9 a.m. and Grinnell at 3 p.m.
