Monmouth College Alpha Xi Delta members Maurer, Rule receive Order of Omega scholarships

by Barry McNamara

Monmouth, IL (02/20/2019) — Two Monmouth College students who are also members of the women's fraternity Alpha Xi Delta were recently awarded scholarships from the Order of Omega, a national organization that recognizes outstanding leadership in the fraternity and sorority community on college campuses.

Ashley Maurer '19 of Fairbury, Ill., received the Patrick W. Halloran Scholarship, a $500 award established to honor a former dean at the University of Miami, where the Order of Omega was founded in 1959.

In her role as president of the College's chapter of the Order of Omega, Maurer helps introduce new ideas to bring the College's Greek life community together and encouraged inter-Greek relationships.

Maurer also serves as the ritual and heritage director for Alpha Xi Delta, is a member of the College's dance team and was a resident assistant and recruitment counselor, all while earning high marks in her classes. She has helped Alpha Xi Delta in various service projects and has been involved in all components of a philanthropy project that raised $45,000 for Autism Speaks over the last four years.

Kaitlyn Rule '18, who graduated in December, received the Kent L. Gardner Scholarship. The $300 award was established to recognize Gardner, the former vice president of student affairs at the University of Texas-Arlington and Order of Omega's executive director from 1971-2013.

During her time as a student, Rule served as the alumnae and family relations chair for Alpha Xi Delta, was president of the student group People of Change, and was secretary of the Order of Omega. Rule was also a counselor during formal sorority recruitment and was a senior mentor for the College's orientation activities.

Since 1985, the Order of Omega has awarded more than $1.2 million in undergraduate scholarships and more than $200,000 in graduate fellowships.
