Scots Host Grinnell next Saturday
MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/05/2021) — Taking the field for the first time in 650 days the Monmouth College Fighting Scots football team lost the season opener at Wartburg 44-3 on Saturday.
The Scots moved the ball right down the field on the first drive with a couple long runs and a completed pass into the red zone from Carter Boyer (Carthage, Illinois) to wideout Jake Uryasz (Farmington, Illinois). The drive stalled inside the 10 and the Scots missed a field goal off the upright.
The game remained scoreless through the first quarter as the Knights also missed a field goal and the teams traded punts. Wartburg scored on the first play of the second quarter and by halftime they had a 30-0 lead. The Knights scored four touchdowns in the quarter plus picked up a safety on a Scots punt.
The Scots got on the board in the third quarter as kicker Cody Szelc (Riverview, Florida) made the first field goal of his career. The points came after Michael Lord (LaHarpe, Illinois) picked off a Wartburg pass for the first Scots turnover of the season.
Wartburg scored on their next two possessions with a blocked punt leading to a touchdown and then a long pass play made it 44-3. The Scots moved the ball down the field in the fourth quarter but fumbled in the red zone to end one drive and Boyer had a pass intercepted in the end zone in the next drive.
The teams traded final drives with no other points scoring. Monmouth was driving into the Wartburg red zone as the clock ran out to end the game.
